Of note, the Red Sox pinched hit for Roman Anthony with Andruw Monastario in the sixth inning. We will wait to hear more on if there is an injury to Anthony, but pinch hitting for him early can't be a good sign.

Prior to being removed from the game, Anthony was 0-2 against Schlittler with two strikeouts. With how thin Boston's offense can be at times, losing their leadoff hitter and one of the biggest power threats in their lineup. Losing him for any stretch of time could really impact the series for Boston.

Following the game, Red Sox manager Chad Tracy told the media at Yankee Stadium that Anthony was removed with a hand injury. The same injury that kept him out with most of the season. The training staff is still evaluating Anthony's injury.

"The hand." Tracy said. "He took a check swing and then another swing and his hand flared on him. And it got uncomfortable, so we had to make a move there."

Tracy was then asked if the hand is something Anthony had been dealing with since coming off the IL. "I don't know yet." He said. "We're still talking through. The game just ended, but it's difficult. Obviously it flares up on him and becomes uncomfortable, and you have to make a move there. So we'll see what the next steps are, but yeah, it was difficult."

UPDATED:

The Boston Red Sox are removing OF Roman Anthony from their postseason roster, Tracy told the media at Yankee Stadium Wednesday.

He was sent back last night after leaving the game." Tracy said. "We sent him back to Boston for extra, additional imaging, which actually revealed some new strains to different muscles in his wrist in addition to exasperating the old injuries. It’s not great."

The Red Sox are working through making a roster move prior to the start of Game 2. Tracy did not have a definitive answer of who would take Anthony's place on the roster. This puts the Red Sox lineup in an even worse spot than it was coming into the series.

Major League Baseball announced that Curtis Mead, who the Red Sox acquired prior to the trade deadline and was on the IL after getting hit on the hand, will replace Roman Anthony on the Wild Card roster. Mead should be able to provide solid impact for Boston.
