# MLB Could Be Forced to Make Unusual Move for Cubs-Red Sox Series

BOSTON — Major League Baseball has a problem on its hands going into the final weekend of the regular season. The Chicago Cubs are gearing up for a trip to Fenway Park for each team's final series of the season. The only issue is the impending weather forecast.

“We’ve been in touch with the Red Sox and MLB,” Cubs team president Jed Hoyer told [The Athletic](https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7621604/2026/09/22/cubs-red-sox-weather/?unlocked%5Farticle%5Fcode=1.DFE.BISq.614gEjRvQJU5&source=emp%5Fshared%5Farticle&smid=url-share-ta). “Nothing’s decided yet, but certainly we’re aware that it’s a really bad forecast. Those things change a lot, so we’ll monitor the weather, but certainly it’s something that is on everyone’s radar.”

The story in The Athletic noted a few potential options for the series: a doubleheader on either Friday or Saturday before the weather gets really bad on Sunday, or potentially a netrul site location, something Hoyer would not comment on, according to the story. 

The issue is that the double header on Friday or Saturday puts whatever opponent the Cubs or Red Sox are facing at a competitive disadvantage. Both teams would be off Sunday and Monday, allowing bullpens to be fully rested for the Wild Card series. If the Red Sox and Cubs play on Monday, which would potentially be a doubleheader, it would put them at a disadvantage going into the postseason as well. 

For the Cubs, the issue becomes greater because of seeding. If the NL Wild Card seeding is fluid going into the weekend with one of the Phillies, Padres, or Cubs potentially hosting a playoff game on Tuesday, this would have big ramifications for travel and ballpark preperation as well.

The best possible choice would be for the sides to play at a neutral site, like Tropicana Field or Globe Life Park, both of which will be vacant over the weekend with their teams on the road. That would allow all three games to commence as normal and allow for travel plans.
